Regarding the last works of Ilija Vitolić, in the afterword of the  monograph, the Serbian art historian Nikola Kusovac remarks:  “All of the values, all of the efforts of his enduring, difficult and  often uncertain struggle of the spirit with the matter, which he  had previously tested in his creative practice both as a sculptor  and as a painter, mostly in his free time and following some  inner, known only to him, need to leave a trace of his exist  ence, are crystallized in those paintings. The drawing upon  whose values - geometrically solid and reduced to its core  structure - he built the expressive appearances of his paintings  and sculptures during the last ten or more years of his life  finally reached its complete and decisive importance for the  whole opus of his artistic achievement.  One thing is definite, if Ilija Vitolić, as an artist, left behind  nothing but the four depictions of the great holy days that he  painted to decorate his chapel, sanctified by his own dedicated  creative work and with his own heartfelt prayers, it would be  more than enough to conclude that he had succeeded, that he  had truly left behind an indelible sign of his earthly existence.”
